Choosing between Ningaloo Reef and the Great Barrier Reef comes down to accessibility and wildlife. Ningaloo is a fringing reef stretching roughly 300 kilometers along Western Australia. The coral sits mere meters from the sand. This lets you snorkel on your own schedule without paying for a daily boat charter.

How do you access Ningaloo compared to the Great Barrier Reef?

You can swim to Ningaloo Reef from the beach, whereas the Great Barrier Reef requires a boat ride.

Because Ningaloo is a fringing reef, locations like Turquoise Bay and Bill's Bay offer immediate coral access. You simply walk into the water and start snorkeling. The Great Barrier Reef is situated further offshore, meaning you need to book a commercial boat tour to see the main reef systems.

Is Ningaloo Reef cheaper to visit?

Shore snorkeling at Ningaloo is nearly free, but reaching the region can cost more.

Access to the Ningaloo marine park is free. You only pay a vehicle entry fee of AUD 17 per day for Cape Range National Park. Since you do not need a daily boat charter to snorkel, your daily activity costs stay low. Read more in our Costs & Tickets guide.

Does Ningaloo have better coral than the Great Barrier Reef?

The Great Barrier Reef is much larger, but Ningaloo offers highly concentrated, accessible marine life.

Ningaloo Reef is home to over 300 species of coral and more than 500 species of reef fish. The marine park also hosts six of the world's seven marine turtle species. While the Great Barrier Reef has higher total species numbers, Ningaloo places its biodiversity just meters from your shoreline.
