Everything you need to know before you travel. Find answers about the best seasons, travel logistics, and safety.

What is the best time of year to visit Ningaloo Reef?

The best time is between March and October. The weather is ideal for water activities. This period also covers the main seasons for whale sharks and humpback whales. Read more in our Best time guide.

When is the whale shark season at Ningaloo Reef?

Whale sharks congregate at the reef annually between March and August. You must book a boat charter to swim with them safely in deep water.

Can you swim with humpback whales at Ningaloo?

Yes. Humpback whales migrate through the area. Swim tours operate specifically from August to October.

Is Ningaloo Reef better than the Great Barrier Reef?

They offer different experiences. Ningaloo is a fringing reef, meaning you can snorkel straight from the beach. The Great Barrier Reef typically requires a boat trip to reach the coral. See our Ningaloo vs GBR article.

Where are the best places to snorkel on Ningaloo Reef?

Top spots include Turquoise Bay and Oyster Stacks in Cape Range National Park. Bill's Bay in Coral Bay is excellent for beginners. Always check tide heights before entering Oyster Stacks.

Is it safe to swim at Ningaloo Reef?

Generally, yes, but you must be aware of ocean conditions. Beware of strong currents at the end of the drift snorkeling area at Turquoise Bay. Wear a rash guard for protection.

Are there crocodiles at Ningaloo Reef?

No. Crocodiles are not found this far south in Western Australia. The waters are home to sharks, turtles, and rays.

Which is better to visit, Exmouth or Coral Bay?

Exmouth offers access to the dramatic gorges of Cape Range National Park. Coral Bay is a small, pedestrian-friendly town where the reef is right at the main beach. Both are excellent bases.

What wildlife can you see at Ningaloo Reef?

The reef hosts over 500 species of fish and 300 coral species. You can see whale sharks, humpback whales, manta rays, and six species of marine turtles. Land wildlife includes black-flanked rock wallabies.

Can you snorkel straight off the beach at Ningaloo?

Yes. Because it is a fringing reef, the coral sits mere metres from the shore. You can wade in at places like Turquoise Bay or Bill's Bay and snorkel immediately.
